Jean (Bitters) Coogan, age 91, a resident of Mystic, CT, for over 70 years, peacefully passed away Thursday, March 7th 2013 at the Westerly Hospital. Born in New London she was the daughter of the late George and Hannah (Mallory) Bitters. She attended Quaker Hill Schools and was a graduate of WMI class of 1938 and the New London Business College where she met and later married her husband, the late, Edward C. Coogan Sr. Jean and her husband made their home on the family farm on Greenmanville Ave. where they raised their three children. She worked for several years for SNET and eventually with the former Sonoco Products in Mystic where she was a secretary. Jean was an avid reader and regularly read up to 3 books a week. She enjoyed cross-stitching, trout fishing, dancing and playing the piano. She especially enjoyed solving her daily crossword puzzles. She also had an extensive collection of crystal and porcelain turtles that she cherished so much. Her family will also miss her humorous wit and her famous “Hannahisms.” She is survived by her three children, Edward C. Coogan Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Stonington, two daughters, Betty Jean Hewitt and her husband, Carl, of Stonington and Martha Flemming and her husband, Neil, of Milford, MA; five grandchildren, Eric Flemming and his wife, Jennifer, Candice Flemming, Sarah and Rachel Coogan and Ginger Hixson and her husband, Andrew; and four great-grandchildren, Krista Flemming and Katarina, Lily, and Alex Hixson; two nephews: John Bitters and George Bitters and his wife, Joan; niece, Barbara Neville and her husband, Richard, She was predeceased by her brother John Bitters of Melbourne, FL. Her family will would like to thank the staff at Apple Rehab for the care and comfort given to Jean during her time there. Her family will receive friends Sunday, March 10th from 4-6 pm at the Mystic Funeral Home Route 1 Mystic. A service will be held Monday at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery Route 27 Mystic. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Apple Rehab Recreation Fund 28 Broadway Mystic, CT. 06355.
